Dead battery indicator light defective on 6 clocks from 2 different stores!.Jul 30, 2010 I bought this for the dual alarm (with radio to wake me up loudly) and the battery backup.
1. The radio signal quality is poor. It does not have a separate antennae. It is part of the wire and so it depends on how you place the wire -- it gets a lot of static unless you place it in the right position which affects where you end up placing the alarm clock.
2. The dead battery indicator did not work on 6 clocks. I initially bought 3 alarm clocks (white) at a Target store and had to return all 3 of them. I removed the battery (which requires a small phillips screwdriver) and with the clock plugged in, the low/dead battery indicator should light up. It didn't so I thought there could be a manufacturing defect in this batch and tried to find another batch from a different store.
I went to a Sears store and had my screwdriver ready to test out the clocks (after talking to the sales rep about my problems with previous purchases). I was hopeful because the clocks were black in color so it was possible that they were manufactured from a different batch. I did not test clocks with consecutive serial numbers hoping to avoid testing clocks from the same batch. Again, I removed the battery with the clock plugged in and the indicator light would not come on. This means that with or without a battery the indicator light for low battery would not come on. So I wouldn't know if the battery was dead. There is no way to know if I inserted a new battery that the clock would work because there could also be a break in the circuit between the battery and the clock. I didn't have a new battery on hand to try it since all the batteries on the clocks were dead -- I knew this because when I plugged out the clocks, the clocks went dead so that tells me the batteries included in the clocks were dead or there is a break somewhere in the circuit from the clock to the battery.
It also makes me wonder about whether any of the Sony clock's low battery indicator works since it would appear as if the battery works when there is no light on the low battery indicator -- until that dreadful morning when the power is out, the alarm clock is dead and I oversleep!
To avoid this, I have been checking for a battery back-up function with an indicator that both work!
I had read in another review that the indicator light was on all the time for another reviewer so that makes me wonder about whether there is a glitch in this function and poor quality control.
Additionally, for 2 of the 3 clocks at Sears, the clock time would not stop blinking 12:00 and could not be reset.
3. Resetting the clock time (on the ones that worked) was easy to set up by selecting the time zone (5 for PST).
4. Overall, I was very disappointed because I wanted a quality clock (with a name brand I could trust) and liked the rest of the functions: relatively easy to use, large number display and being able to set up 2 different alarm times, one for workdays, one for non-workdays.
I can't find another clock with the same functions for under $25 so if anyone knows of one, please, PLEASE, let me know. Thank you.
creepy!Jul 28, 2010 on more than one occassion my alarm has went off without it even being plugged in... its probably just a manufactures defect but its still scary =/
Can't be beat for the priceJul 26, 2010 A clock with dual alarms that is compact, easy to set, and sounds okay, all for a reasonable price. Unlike some of the reviewers, I think the alarm is quite loud enough (I tend to sleep through thunderstorms) and the adjustable readout is not too bright on its lowest setting. My only criticism is that I wish that the shutoff button on top were easier to distinguish by feel alone, but for the price I am very satisfied.
Nearly Perfect Alarm ClockJul 18, 2010 I can't imagine a better alarm clock. The dual alarm feature is useful even if only used by 1 person - weekends are different you know. The automatic time set feature is nice - but does preclude fooling yourself by setting the time forward for extra minutes. The alarm set function is the best I've experienced. You can toggle forward or back to the precise time desired without having to go around again. The buzzer alarm is ideal to me. A gentle wake-up is all many people will need - but it does get more forceful if the alarm is unanswered. If a person needs a strong wake-up they can use the wake to music setting and turn up the volume.
I can imagine a better radio. It would be nice to have a better speaker and tuner. But how many people will listen to this radio much? It is fully adequate for what it's designed for. It gives a decent mono sound in the FM mode. There's not much reason to pay more for an alarm clock.
marginal antenna for marginal reception, arrives with dead batteryJul 01, 2010 Two shortcomings. I ordered it because I read somewhere that it has an external antenna, so I thought I could hook up a simple dipole. Well, I guess what they meant was that, as with many radios, the power cord (which I guess is external) is the antenna on FM. Oh well, better than nothing for fiddling the reception.
The second issue is that, as I think others have noted, it arrives with a dead battery, which kind of obviates the backup feature. So if you're looking for that, get a fresh 2032 battery too. Not exactly the kind of customer-friendly service I would have expected from Sony and Amazon.
But bottom line, for the price, I'm glad to have it.
